March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

For 26 years, The Arc of the United States has sponsored Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to enhance understanding of the issues affecting people with developmental disabilities and educate the public that people with developmental disabilities can be vital and vibrant members of communities.

According to a recent study by the CDC:

  • Developmental disabilities affect more than 7 million Americans (and more than 121,000 Alabamians)
  • About one in six children in the U.S. had one or more developmental disabilities or delays in 2006-2008
  • The prevalence of parent-reported developmental disabilities increased 17 percent from 1997-2008

These statistics underscore the increasing need for specialized health services, education and social services for people with developmental disabilities.

Report: Education tax credits could cost state $367 million

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- The Alabama Association of School Boards calculated the first cost estimate of House Bill 84, the widely expanded school flexibility measure that also included tax credits for parents who move their child from a failing school into a better one which includes private schools.

The cost could be tremendous.

According to the analysis by AASB the tax credits could cost the Education Trust Fund between $59 million and $367 million. The wide range is attributed to the unknown nature of who will take advantage of the credits, as well as how many.

The study of the legislation accounts for the scenarios that include the families of private and public school children taking advantage of the incentive which could reach as much as $4,000 per child.

New tornado app brings Red Cross safety information to mobile devices

New tornado app brings Red Cross safety information to mobile devices

The American Red Cross has launched its official Tornado App. The app puts lifesaving information right in the hands of people who live in, visit, or have loved ones in tornado-prone areas.

This free app—available in English or Spanish—gives iPhone, iPad and Android smart phone and tablet users instant access to local and real-time information, so they know what to do before, during and after a tornado. The app includes a high-pitched siren and “tornado warning!” alert that signals people when a NOAA tornado warning has been issued in their area – even if the app is closed. An “all clear!” alert lets users know when a tornado warning has expired or has been cancelled.

“Tornadoes often happen in the overnight hours when people are sleeping,” said Billy Baxter, Executive Officer for the Alabama Region.
