Alabama Tourism Publishes Official Book for the  “Year of Alabama Food”

Montgomery, Ala.— More than 225 dishes at restaurants across the state are featured in a new photo book titled Alabama Food that goes on sale Dec. 3.

The colorful 128-page book was produced in cooperation with the Alabama Tourism Department and covers the food scene in the state by geographic region, starting in North Alabama and ending with the Gulf Coast. It’s based on the popular “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die” brochure and emphasizes unique and original Alabama restaurants, the growth of the farm-to- table movement, and native Alabama foods.

A section profiles food products manufactured in the state. More than two dozen Alabama photographers contributed images for the book. Karim Shamsi-Basha’s photo of Hot and Hot Fish Club’s iconic Tomato Salad is on the book’s cover.

Alabama Restaurant Week is a way for restaurants around the state, including many featured on the popular "l00 Dishes" brochure to invite diners to experience the wonderful culinary scene of Sweet Home Alabama.

'Alabama's Best Steak' contest kicks off with a bang

The Alabama Cattlemen’s Association has kicked off the “Alabama’s Best Steak” contest, a statewide beef promotion designed to find the best steakhouse in the state. Online voting for this contest began on July 1st and will continue until September 24th. The contest is open to anyone to vote and any restaurant in Alabama that serves a great steak to their customers.

After a few weeks of online voting, over 40 steak restaurants around the state have been voted for in “Alabama’s Best Steak” contest. Cattlemen and consumers all around Alabama are visiting www.bamabeef.org and clicking on the “Alabama’s Best Steak” icon to vote on the online survey. It’s simple and only takes a few clicks! Keep the votes coming in to ensure that your steakhouse in the “Top 5” of vote-getters. The “Top 5” will be announced as a kickoff to “October Beef Month”!

More than 100 Alabama Restaurants Sign Up For Statewide “Restaurant Week”

Montgomery, Ala. — An initial 132 Alabama Restaurants have signed up for participation in the Alabama Tourism Department’s inaugural statewide “Restaurant Week” scheduled for August 17-26. The deadline to register and post online menus on the website, www.AlabamaRestaurantWeek.com, is July 17.

A few of the restaurants already signed up include Lulu’s at Homeport Marina, Cobalt’s and Cosmos in Gulf Shores; Commerce Kitchen, Grille 29, Clementine’s and Ruth Chris in Huntsville; Roux’s, Michaels Table, and Central in Montgomery; Jesse’s in Magnolia Springs, the Rattlesnake Saloon in Tuscumbia; True Midtown Kitchen and The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint in Mobile; The Overall Company in Auburn/Opelika; and  Dreamland BBQ & Bob Baumhowers in multiple locations across Alabama.

"100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die" brochure now avalable

The Alabama Tourism Department today released a new version of its food brochure as part of The Year of Alabama Food campaign. The brochure, 100 Dishes to eat in Alabama Before You Die, lists more than 30 new dishes.

Bessemer’s Bright Star Broiled Star Seafood Platter appears on the front cover of the printed brochure while the back cover shows plates of food from tourism’s Top 25 dishes. The publication is red with white lettering and white plates of food that represent Alabama’s culinary offerings.

The brochure highlights dishes at award-winning restaurants, historic diners, famous BBQ joints, farm-to-table, fresh Gulf seafood and home cooking.

Area chef competes on Iron Chef television show - Lake Martin Magazine

Springhouse Restaurant Executive Chef Rob McDaniel has had since July 2011 to get used to the idea of being on national television. And now, he’s finally ready for all the questions about his Iron Chef experience to be answered.

“I’ve gotten used to people asking me questions and me not being able to answer,” McDaniel said. “A lot of people know we went and competed, but that’s all we’ve been able to say.”

McDaniel was chosen to serve as sous chef for Chris Hastings, executive chef at Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, for an episode of the show Iron Chef America filmed in New York City last July.

The Alabama Department of tourism has deemed 2012 the "Year of Alabama Food" and to celebrate, they've come up with a list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before you Die. All of the dishes and restaurants were suggested by "tourism professionals" in Alabama. Check out the list of restaurants close to you, or click the link to see the state-wide list.
